2018 Goals

Every year I like to create some New Years Goals. Not resolutions. I don’t like that word. Goals. When I think about the general culture for new year’s resolutions they seem to be something which everyone does for January and the perception is that they are something temporary until we fall back into our old habits. Going to the gym for a month or dry January. What difference would that really make to our lives? (Pro tip: Nothing). I prefer to set goals. Yearly goals. Why? Because a goal is a long term strategy towards habit change, changing something in our life permanently so that it becomes a reflex and stays with us in the future. Moreover, getting these goals down in writing at the start of the year is sooooo important because it gives you both a reference point during the year to remind yourself of your aims and a yardstick to measure your progress by at the end of the year. So here we go:

Goal 1: 6am Challenge

My first goal of 2018 is the 6am challenge, to get up at 6am for 365 days in a row. I have made this a goal for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I hate to feel like i’m wasting a day. We only have so many days on this earth and spending them in bed is something that fills me with a sense of impending doom. I would rather get up and get at em’! Secondly, I find it hard to get some peace during a regular day. There is always someone who needs something or a question to answer. Not may people are up and working at 6am, so this buys me the peace and quiet I want to work on my own things.

Goal 2: Lean a New Skill

The second goal of 2018 seems to be quite a generic one, but I would argue that it is also crucial to set such a goal. The reason that I have left this open ended is because quite honestly I don’t know what I want my skill to be! I am by nature an extremely inquisitive and curious person and so there are three new things I see every day that I want to learn and by forcing myself to select the skill so quickly I would be rushing into a decision. With that being said, my current ideas include learning Javascript (I would love to be able to build some decent web apps) or a new language (potentially Mandarin or South Korean)!

Goal 3: Internalise my Work Out Schedule

To clarify. I like to work out. And I am extremely competitive. And I like that. So what I want to do in 2018 is get into a rhythm of working out at specific intervals (be it every day or every other day etc.) rather than going to train when I feel like it. I would also like this to encompass my eating habits as well, something which is a bit more challenging for me. Ideally I would like to be training 6 times a week (hopefully using my extra morning hours to do this most days!) and eating a set diet along the lines of the Tim Ferris Slow Carb Diet which I have found especially effective in the past.

Goal 4: A New Business Project

Another one of my passions in life is starting businesses. I don’t know why but I find it so much fun. The challenge of creating something from scratch that gains traction and becomes important in other peoples lives, all from an idea that you have had. There is almost nothing better in life than when you see something you have created start to grow, like a baby starting to grow up (admittedly I have no kids so I can’t really tell you how that is…parents out there?). So my fourth and final goal for 2018 is to create a new business project that I can enjoy and develop. My current business has grown to the stage now where I can get some time away and that gives me an opportunity that I haven’t had for the past two years, how exciting!

Summary

Goal 1: 6am Challenge

Goal 2: Lean a New Skill

Goal 3: Internalise my Work Out Schedule

Goal 4: A New Business Project

So there. I will be reading this post throughout the year to see how my progress compares to what I wanted to do. Perhaps you will think about creating some goals for 2018 rather than the old resolution of dry January?
